Physical And Chemical Properties
This product is a colorless transparent liquid with camphor odor, m.p.-80℃, b.p.117-118℃, n20D 1.3960, relative density 0.801, f.p.56℉(13℃), almost insoluble in water, but can form azeotropes with water, its boiling point is 87.9℃, containing water 24.3%, containing ketone 75.7%, can be used with phenol, aldehyde, ether, benzene and other organic solvents Miscible with phenol, aldehyde, ether, benzene and other organic solvents. The product is toxic and the vapor irritates the eyes and respiratory tract.

Colorless transparent liquid. With aromatic ketone odor. Miscible with ethanol, ether, acetone, benzene, etc. Soluble in water (1-91%). Its vapor forms explosive mixture with air and can cause combustion and explosion when it meets open fire and high heat. It can react strongly with oxidizer. In case of high heat, the pressure inside the container increases and there is a risk of cracking and explosion. Dissolve some plastics, resins and rubber.
Application

Used as intermediates of medicine and dyestuff. The pesticide o-chlorobenzaldehyde can be used to control mites on dry crops and fruit trees. The o-chlorobenzaldehyde can be oxime to get o-chlorobenzaldoxime, further chlorination can get o-chlorobenzaldoxime, both are drug intermediates.
Preparation
Methyl isobutyl ketone can be obtained from industrial methyl isobutyl ketone sub-distillation.
Use
Effective separator for some inorganic salts, separating plutonium from uranium, niobium from tantalum and zirconium from hafnium. Also used as an anticoagulant and diluent for vinyl-type resins. It is an excellent medium boiling point solvent. It is used as a solvent for mineral processing agent, oil dewaxing, coloring agent for color films, and also used as a solvent for tetracycline, pyrethroids and DDT, etc. It is also used in organic synthesis industry.
Safety
Human inhalation can cause central nervous system inhibition and anesthesia. At high inhalation concentration, it can stimulate the respiratory tract and cause nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, etc. Staff should be protected and the workplace should be ventilated. Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat source. Protect from direct sunlight. Keep the container sealed. Should be stored separately from oxidizers.
